Drumming for non-drummers

Let me start by saying, I am not a “drummer”, I highly doubt I will ever regard myself as a professional. This is more of a personal position than anything, I am on the other hand a professional researcher. For more info on that see my Portfolio or Journal.

As of the beginning of 2014 I set myself 1,3 and 5 year goals of varying challenges, although I have not advertised them as I have been progressing through them more and more of my friends got to know of what I was doing. Running and Climbing are two of my most successful 1 year goals, in contrast I set my music ambitions as quite small, with a build to bigger goals in 3 years. So here is my 1 year goal:

well, that would be a little to simple, but essentially yes my goal for the year was to get a drum kit and start to learn. It may not sound like I’m dreaming big on this one, having not played in over 10 years I felt this would be a good step. I know many people who try to pick up an instrument often purchase and collect dust, so this was my major hurdle.

When I was younger you need a drum teacher, now I believe you can learn a lot online and drumming is one of those things. I realise online teaching probably isn’t a substitute to a teacher, but for my original aspirations I feel it will be ok. The only test of this will be time.

So what will this blog be about, well drumming and my aim to eventually get back up onto a stage with a set of fellow musicians and hopefully play music that we and others will enjoy. Till I get to that point it will be a blog of random videos of me learning different techniques and hopefully some tips and tricks I pick up along the way.

Next post should be a video, fingers crossed!
